Marketing Plan Development

Marketing Plan Development for B2B Companies

A research-grounded go-to-market plan built around how your buyers actually decide, sized to the budget and talent you have to run it.

01 — Why Now
01 — Why Now

The shortcuts are wearing out

For years, a company could lean on paid ads and direct sales outreach to force growth even without a marketing strategy behind them. Both are losing effectiveness in the AI era, and the companies that leaned on them hardest are feeling it first. That has created real urgency to get marketing right, and getting it right starts with a plan.

Built by outside experts, a plan gives you what an internal view rarely produces: an honest read on where you stand, and a strategy that makes every effort that follows count.

02 — Self-Check

Two ways companies arrive here

Some executives look at marketing and see a cost center. The team is busy and the invoices arrive, but the connection to revenue stays hard to draw, and they know the function needs to operate at a higher level. What they want is the blueprint: the people, tools, processes, and technology it will take to compete.

Others arrive with plenty of activity. Emails go out, social channels stay fed, ads run, content gets produced. But each piece was built channel by channel, and they do not fit together into pipeline impact over time. Both situations are missing the same thing. Not more effort. An organizing strategy.

03 — Our Approach

Plans are our core competency

We have created hundreds of marketing plans for B2B companies. It is the discipline at the core of our B2B marketing consulting practice, and every plan holds to three standards. Grounded in research, so strategy rests on evidence rather than opinion. Practical, sized to the budget and talent you actually have, because a plan the organization cannot fund or staff is a document rather than a strategy. And actionable, built to be run by the team that receives it. Senior strategists build every plan, with your executive team in the room where it counts.

04 — The Three Plans

Three plans, sized to the decision you’re making

Marketing plan development at Marketri is three distinct engagements, each scoped as a project with a defined timeline. They build in depth, and the right one depends on what you need to decide.

Marketing assessment (about four weeks)

An outside grade on the marketing you have today. We interview your stakeholders, assess the team, the website, the brand and messaging, and the technologies behind them, and evaluate how your efforts perform against similar companies in your industry. You receive a report card, the KPIs to watch, and quick-win recommendations you can act on immediately.

Marketing action plan (six to eight weeks)

A step beyond the assessment. We add competitor analysis and build the channel and campaign strategies that connect your activity into a coherent program, with the KPIs to measure success.

Strategic marketing plan (eight to twelve weeks)

The complete operating blueprint, built through the early stages of the Marketri Momentum Model. It includes market and customer research, customer interviews, strategy recommendations covering where to play and how to win, positioning and messaging, campaign and channel strategies by market, brand campaigns, industry-specific plans, and the KPI and funnel metrics to measure progress. It is the plan for a company ready to organize everything around growth.

06 — What Happens Next

How the plan lands, and the two paths after it

Every plan is delivered in one or two readouts with your executive team. We present the findings and the strategy, take the feedback, and incorporate it. Then we put together the timeline and budget, so what you approve is a plan your leadership has already shaped.

With the plan, timeline, and budget in hand, you make a resourcing decision. Some companies assess their in-house team against what the plan requires and staff it internally. The plan is built to be run, and it will serve an internal team well. Many mid-market B2B companies decide fractional marketing is the better path, and engage a ready-made team to execute the plan and measure progress and outcomes.

Continuing with Marketri carries a structural advantage. The strategic marketing plan is built through the early stages of the Momentum Model, the same framework our fractional teams run. There is no handoff and no re-discovery. The engagement simply keeps moving.

Scrubbed’s first strategic marketing plan

We have created the first strategic marketing plan for many companies, including Scrubbed. The plan brought a sharper vertical focus to the firm’s marketing strategy, concentrating on the industries where its expertise runs deepest. That focus changed what Scrubbed could ask of the market: larger clients, and the higher fees that industry expertise commands.

Herb Benjamin

We made the difficult decision to move from an in-house Marketing generalist to an outside marketing firm to help direct our efforts into social media. After interviewing a number of companies, we chose to partner with Marketri. Looking back, we are glad we made the choice. The team Marketri has assembled to handle our account as well as the additional resources Marketri can call on for specific projects has been invaluable. Everything we have wanted to accomplish such as increased digital presence; rebranding of a new showroom and initial ad campaigns have been handled seamlessly by Marketri. Many thanks to Deb Andrews and her team.

Scrubbed has worked with Deb Andrews, Trisha Gallagher, and the rest of the Marketri team for the past 3 years now. It won’t take much to research and compare what our brand looked like before Marketri, and how it looks like now. Spoiler Alert – a huge difference in look and feel. Marketri witnessed Scrubbed’s growth these past few years and it has been a fantastic experience working with them. I strongly recommend talking to Deb Andrews about your growth needs.

Start with a plan built to be run

If marketing should be operating at a higher level, the fastest path is a plan sized to the company you actually are. Let’s talk about which of the three fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marketing plan development is the creation of a strategic roadmap that organizes a company’s marketing around its growth goals: who to target, where to compete, which channels and campaigns to run, and the people, tools, processes, and technology needed to compete. Marketri delivers it as three scoped engagements of increasing depth: a marketing assessment, a marketing action plan, and a strategic marketing plan.
