What This Skill Does
Names the real gap, not just the symptom
Sorts what feels like "marketing isn't working" into one of four distinct, actionable gap types.
Tells leadership from execution apart
Distinguishes "no one's driving this" from "someone's driving it but it's not getting done," which need completely different responses.
Ranks the gap when more than one shows up
When symptoms point to two gap types at once, names which one is upstream and driving the other.
Grounded in your own answers, not a checklist score
Every rating traces to what you actually said, never a generic maturity-model guess.
Stops before prescribing a fix
Hands you a clear diagnosis so your next conversation - hiring, agency, leadership - starts from the right premise.
Best Used For
- When marketing activity is happening but nothing seems to move the business, and you're not sure why
- Before a hiring, agency, or leadership conversation, so you know what kind of gap that conversation actually needs to close
- Sorting out "is no one really driving this" from "someone's driving it but things don't get done"
- A structured second opinion when your gut says something's off but you can't name what
How It Works
When marketing isn't producing results, the instinct is to jump straight to a fix - hire someone, replace the agency, demand a new plan - before actually knowing what's broken. A leadership gap, a strategy gap, an execution gap, and a capability gap can all look identical from the outside ("marketing just isn't working"), but each one needs a completely different response.
This skill asks a short set of pointed questions about who owns marketing decisions, whether a plan connects activity to a business goal, whether agreed-on work actually gets done, and whether the people executing have real experience in what they're being asked to do. Each of the four gap types gets rated Present, Partial, or Not evident directly from your own answers - never a generic score. When more than one type shows up, it names which is the deeper, upstream cause.
You walk away with a clear-eyed classification of what's actually broken - not a hiring recommendation, not a strategy, just a precise read on the type of gap so whatever conversation comes next starts from the right premise.

Common questions
No - it names which type of gap is present (leadership, strategy, execution, or capability). What to do about it - hire, agency, freelancer, fractional leader - is a separate decision this doesn't make for you.
That's common. It identifies which gap type is upstream and driving the others, so you know where to start.
No - the questions are in plain business language (who's in charge, does a plan exist, does work get done). You don't need to know the terminology going in.
No - it goes deep on one specific question (what type of gap is present) rather than scanning broadly across reporting, budget, and agency relationship.
